What do you do when you have left-over yarn? Make a mandala! This could be used as a coaster or just to look pretty on your desk!
To make this Mandala I used a 3.5mm hook and Scheepjes Catona yarn in colours red, green, purple and orange. You will only need a small amount of each skein, perfect for using up scraps of yarn!
You can find the PDF of this pattern here.
Some of the rows require working into a row one or two below the one you are working on. That makes it a bit hard to describe so if you’re struggling, I’ve also put some photo instructions against some of the harder to describe rows below!

Notes: Please read all of the instructions through before you start
Row 1: In colour 1 (red for me), make a magic loop, ch3 (counts as stitch), then make 10tr into the magic loop. Join with a ss into top of starting chain and pull through to cast-off
Row 2: Change to colour 2 (green for me), ch1, *2dc in same ch, 1dc, repeat from *until there is one stitch remaining, 2dc in that then join with a ss into first stitch of round and pull-through to cast-off
Row 3: Change to colour 3 (purple for me), ch3, 2tr in same chain as this first tr, *ch1, sk1, 3tr in same chain, repeat from * to end of round, ch1 and join to first stitch of round with a ss, pull through to cast-off
Row 4: Change to colour 4 (orange for me) ch2, *2dc, 2dc in same chain then working with row 3 to the front, 1dtr in skipped chain of row 2, repeat from * to end of round, end with 1dtr, ss and cast-off as for previous rows
Note: Some additional info on where to make the dtc is as follows:
Start this round here….
Once you have done your first 4dc, make the dtc as follows:
It should look like this…!
Row 5: Change to colour 1 (red for me), ch3, 4htc, *with row 4 behind, insert hook into ch1 of row 3 (insert from back to front (top to bottom) and make 1tr, without skipping a stitch for the 1tr made into row, 5htc, repeat from * until end of round, make 1tr into last ch1 of row 3 and join with ss and pull-through as for previous rows
Row 6: Change to colour 2 (green for me) ch1, 1dc in each stitch of round, join with ss and pull-through to cast-off.
That’s it! 🙂 you’re done except to weave in the ends. Make sure you do this securely!
I tried it out as a coaster…. not with tea but with Aperol Spritz. I think it works well! 😊
