Bullfinch Blanket continues

A quick update on my Bullfinch Blanket progress.

Surprisingly for me, I’m still really enjoying this project. I had a sneaking feeling that 140 squares of garter stitch would have me reaching for another project (and there is still time for that!)

I’ve written before that I’m NOT a “completer-finisher” and my WIP pile will confirm this. However I do like the little milestones that the blanket provides. I can knit a square in a little over an hour and so completing one square a night is easily achievable.

Plus, each new square is like a new project, especially with the anticipation of what the colour-change is going to look like next to the other colours.

I’m also terrible at reaching for my phone when I’m watching TV and endlessly doom-scrolling through social media. That’s not very healthy! I’ve remembered that knitting occupies my hands and the part of my brain that wants to do two things at once!

But back to the blanket….It is looking really pretty, but I’m still struggling with gauge.

As the pattern is designed for the mega whirl, it gives instructions for what the blanket should weigh after 5, 10, 20 etc squares. Knitters are advised to weigh at each of these points to make sure that they are still on gauge.

At the last weigh-in point of 10 squares, I was only 1-2g over the gauge weight. I continued therefore with my 3mm needles.

I was supposed to weigh it again after square 20….but I got carried away with the knitting and finished square 21 before I remembered to weigh!

According to the instructions, it should have weighed 79g after 20 squares.

At 21 squares, my blanket weighs 90g.  Deducting 4-5g for square 21, I am now roughly 5-6g over weight. That could leave me c. 30-40g over at the end of the squares.  The border requires 110g, so that’s quite a significant proportion.

So….I have a dilemma about what to do.  The mega whirl isn’t colour-matched to any whirlette so I can’t just use some extra yarn if I run out.  I could just go with a different yarn in the border though.

I’m going to ponder what to do and I’ll keep you posted either way!

Happy Knitting folks!

Jo
